Sustainability Magazine: How Budderfly Is Upgrading Commercial Energy Infrastructure

October 28, 2026 - Budderfly was featured in Sustainability Magazine, where Chief Sales Officer Rob Simons explained how the company’s energy-as-a-service model can help commercial customers fund infrastructure upgrades without adding debt or upfront capital. Rob described the model as one that “converts committed energy spend into capital,” with Budderfly bearing the performance risk and using the bulk of the resulting savings to pay for new equipment. He also discussed how contract terms can be tailored to whether a customer prioritizes near-term EBITDA or long-term savings.

The piece also covers Budderfly’s expansion beyond quick-service restaurants, where equipment replacements have cut energy use by up to 30%, into fitness centers, healthcare campuses, retail stores and factories. Rob explained how efficiency requests at industrial sites can grow into full infrastructure overhauls, including rooftop HVAC, lighting, a building management system and potentially solar. The article also highlights Budderfly’s role as commercial partner in Schneider Electric’s Accelerating Resilient Infrastructure initiative, which is focused on more than 1,000 mid-sized U.S. towns. The first project is the City of Cadillac, where Budderfly is investing over $4 million to modernize energy infrastructure across six municipal buildings.
